The focus of this project is twofold. First of all, the differences between various engine types (electrical and combustion engine, hybrid propulsion) and their potential contributions to a ressource-efficient mode of transportation are evaluated. The second aspect comprises the conception and development of driving strategies which enable an economical and environmental way of driving by intelligently utilizing the available traffic lanes and by considering other circumstances such as e.g. the current road conditions (slope, gradient) or intersection control schemes, i.e. the different phases of traffic lights. By reasonable changing lanes and by accelerating and braking in an anticipatory manner both fuel consumption and exhaust emissions should be reduced by at the same time not affecting other vehicles in an adverse way. The driving strategies developed in the scope of this project should be implemented in the form of computational algorithms, which are integrated and evaluated with the aid of the microscopic traffic simulator TraffSim.
